About Robert A. Hill
Robert
A. Hill, founder and Chairman of Floor Covering Associates
(FCA) has built a group of floor covering businesses from
a single store in suburban Chicago in 1976 to a large operation
which today includes nine stores in the Midwest, a national buying
group (the FCA Network) and a Design Center, which sells furniture
and window treatments. His floor covering stores sell
carpeting,
ceramic tile,
hardwood and area rugs to the retail, builder and
commercial markets.
Hill named his company Floor
Covering Associates because, from the beginning, he thought of floor
covering as more than just carpet. The concept of multi-product
offerings was always at the heart of his business.
In 1989, Hill developed a large-format
store in Naperville, Illinois, that was built around the concept
of creating a “destination” for all floor covering products.
The success of the Naperville concept prompted Hill to close his
smaller stores and begin developing only large-format “one-stop”
stores. By the end of 1999, Hill had established the large-format
store as the core of his business.
Hill has just begun a term
as Chairman of the World Floor Covering Association (WFCA) after
previously serving as its Vice-Chairman and as CFO. He joined the
National Floorcovering Alliance (NFA) in 1995, and has served as
both its President and Vice-President. Hill has been the recipient
of numerous industry awards, including the Chicago Floor Covering
Association’s “Retailer of the Year,” and the Illinois Home Builders
Association “Subcontractor of the Year.”
Born and raised in California,
Hill is a graduate of the University of California at Berkeley.
He began his career in floor covering with his first job, as a mill
contract salesman in San Francisco. He is the father of two
daughters. He and his wife live in Chicago.
