Waterproof Flooring 101
Life is busy. In every household, spills occur without warning. Pipes and appliances spring leaks; water gets splashed from sinks and showers – and that’s just what you can see. If left sitting too long, liquid can ruin hard surfaces and cause harmful mold to develop. Liquid can seep into the boards on most hard surface floors and warp them. This is irreversible damage that also leads to unpleasant mildew. Finding the resources to deal with that kind of floor damage can be a headache, to say the least. With waterproof luxury vinyl, all that worry is gone.
Waterproof floors are a sustainable hard surface that stands up to moisture and daily wear – and looks great at the same time. Underneath the surface layers, the rigid core of these floors is made up of materials that prevent any warping or buckling that moisture can cause. The topmost wear layer is scratch-resistant, so they can stand up to everyday scuffs from foot traffic, furniture, and your pet’s nails. Visually, waterproof floors are beautiful to look at. They feature highly realistic wood and stone looks, and there are many color options available to fit whatever room and décor styles you have. Additionally, these floors are easy to install, clean, and maintain. They are available in glue-down or click-lock format, so you can install them anywhere in your home. They are ideal for active households and perform exceptionally well in high-moisture areas such as kitchens, bathrooms, and basements. When you invest in waterproof floors, you’re getting more than an update to the room. You will experience the worry-free feeling of knowing that they will stop scratches, small spills – or worse – in their tracks. Let life carry on.
LVP, WPC, SPC, oh my!
Waterproof flooring is an exciting category that is becoming hugely popular with homeowners all over the country. This floor type features several options with many beautiful colors and styles. Which one is right for you will depend on your needs, and the good news is there is something available for any space that is easy to install. As you shop for waterproof flooring, you may hear several abbreviations such as LVP, WPC, and SPC. What do they mean?
LVP (Luxury Vinyl Plank) – The original, and most common type in the waterproof floor category. This is a simple, sustainable floor that contains a flexible vinyl PVC core. The top layers of each plank feature a gorgeous, high-definition image that gives it a realistic wood or stone look and a wear layer that protects against scratches. LVP is easy to install and can either be click-locked or glued down on a level subfloor. Once installed, maintenance on LVP is simple, as regular sweeping or damp mopping is all that is needed.
WPC (Wood Plastic Composite) – A thicker, stronger alternative to LVP. WPC was designed as a floating floor, meaning it doesn’t have to be glued down; it can be installed right over your existing floor. WPC comes with four main layers for added durability, comfort, and protection. The topmost layers are virtually the same as LVP and this is a great option if you cannot or do not want to glue the floor down.
SPC (Stone Plastic Composite) – The newest member of the waterproof family, SPC is even more rigid and dense than WPC due to the core layer made of stone dust. This floor can be floated over any existing floor and gives you a lot of options for installation. Like WPC, the top layers contain both a vinyl topcoat that has the perfect wood or stone visual – and the transparent wear layer that provides scratch and stain resistance. In all, waterproof vinyl floors are a great option for highly active and busy households. They are durable and will stand up well to daily wear and tear while retaining their beauty – and protecting your investment.
